Ngurah Rai Airport (International), Bali, Indonesia
Context:
In an attempt to expand its market share in Indonesia, Hard Rock International (HRI) with its Hard Rock Cafe (HRC) brand was looking to establish an outlet in the newly opened international terminal of Ngurah Rai International Airport in Bali. As HRC's franchise owner in Indonesia, MRA managed to secure an irregularly shaped unit with curved retail perimeters in the middle of the international departure lounge.
Concept:
The design intends to create a bold design and collaborate it with HRC's standard requirements of Rockshop displays and memorabilia applications throughout the restaurant. Because in the end, the interior design must complement the HRC brand through its memorabilia and merchandise.
Interior:
The unit's unique nature is that it has two shop fronts, one facing the hallway where people come after immigration, and one facing the pier side where people also pass by on their way to the gates. When not laid out properly, there is a possibility that people might walk through the unit to get to the gates faster. Another issue is that the hallway side opening is considerably narrower than the pier opening. So the first impression that people see of the unit is not a grand one. Not to mention that most people go in a hurry so that they don't consider stopping at the outlet unless something unique catches their attention. Having previous collaborative success in the HRC Jakarta outlet, MRA appointed Hadiprana to design the Bali airport outlet. Right away, the focus was to address the two openings and how to make them both appealing for passersby. The solution is to create two different functions for both openings. The smaller hallway opening will serve as the Rockshop entrance, while the larger one will serve as the restaurant entrance. By separating the two areas and activities, the operator can control people's flow while making both the Rockshop and restaurant shop fronts attractive. People will see the Rockshop logo with the glowing double-neck HRC guitar signage walking from the immigration gate. As they get closer, they will notice the circular ceiling detail, which illustrates the Balinese 'Kecak" dance, omplete with the fire motif mosaic tiles at the center cashier. Aside from the fire colors, other colors are to remain subtle as the background for the merchandise. Continuing the walk through the curved hallway, people will see the restaurant shop front with its large HRC logo on the bulkhead. The facade remains open to allow people to see every angle of the interior. The interior is designed with "glam rock" style in mind, where combinations of rustic materials and flashy colors set up an eccentric ambiance.
